Made of the strongest poly hay cord for longer wear, Tough1®'s Deluxe Round Bale Slow Feed Hay Net is designed for Round Bales. This net design helps horses eat slower and cause less waste.
 
Note:  These Nets are each hand made and there may be some variance in them.  Also, the openings will increase in size as the knots are pulled tight.  Measuring it loose will not provide an accurate measurement.

After placing the net over the bale, at the bottom is where you pull the rope which will tighten around the bottom. I then use a carabiner to hold it taught. The net was really a game changer to slowing my horses eating down.

Do these fit the the biggest round bale?

These should fit a 6x6 roundbale.

How do you put it on?

For round bales I have put them on in the pick up or on the ground and stood them up, or by tractor and one poker in the center and tie it standing in the bucket, after putting in place I would tighten it up, weaving the end some and stuffing the rest in side the net. For large square bales I have used them by balancing the bale on double pokers on tractor bucket, putting the net over about 3/4 of the bale. Then setting the bale down on one end and sliding forks out having cut the twine before setting down I left 1/4of the bale on the forks for feeding seperately. The whole bale doesn't fit but I made it work with them. Just get determined and creative with them.

What size round bale does this fit?

We couldn't get it on our 5 x 6 bales. Took off the outer layers of hay, even then we had to put the net on sideways, since it still was too short to go on from front to back. It's an oddly made net, and not very good material. We have nets from several manufacturers. Conclusion: Hay Chix are WELL worth the extra cost.

I do us this for cattle and just put it inside a feeder like I do for my horses. It works fine for me, but I only have four cows and a couple of butcher steers eating on it.

Highly Recommended
This is a great solution when wanting to save your hay and money. Using the hay net with a short hog panel gave us 2 weeks of additional forage. Our horses are healthier with constant forging; their heads are not buried in the hay causing coughing nor hay in their eyes.

Don?t use for stock with horns.
The hay nets are of good quality and reduce hay waste greatly. I would warn anyone using them to feed stock with horns against them. We spent a lot of time untangling our sheep from the nets.

Good Theory -- Needs Work to be Workable
The theory is good, but the actual use for me was impossible. It took two of us about 15 minutes to get the net in place and tied. Of course, this was our first attempt and we hoped to improve our style. After placing the bale in the field, we remained hopeful. The next day when I checked on the hay, I was disappointed to find several rather large holes along the seam. I repaired them with binder twine which held. The problem continued with more holes being torn in the net until most of the hay had been eaten. At that point, a couple of hundred pounds of nasty wet hay was left in the net, too heavy to move by hand. I found a helper who brought the tractor out to raise the net so that the remaining hay could be worked out of the net. The return process has been bothersome and is still in progress.

So far so good!
The round bale hay net has only been in use two weeks and so far I would say it has lengthened the time it takes to go through the hay. My guestamite is probably a 15-20% extended life of the bale which is a great thing in this crazy, expensive economy. I use mine inside of a hayhut and that already had given the horses extended time to consume the hay with less waste. The net keeps the horse from taking those giant mouthfuls of hay which usually end up on the ground and then pooped and peed on and not getting eaten. The net took two applications of two different nets for me to figure out an easy and effective way to get the net on the round bale and then transport by tractor to a pallet that the bale sits on. I gathered up the excess netting and wound the lead around it in a ball making the net taught on the hay. So far the horses have consumed about 70% in two weeks and that?s two horses per bale. I would?ve given the net five stars, but I haven?t had a chance yet to see what it looks like when the hay is gone to see how it held up to constant nibbling at it to get the hay. So far from what I can see, the cord used on the netting is durable and it seems to not be tattered from the teeth of the horses. I bought three and two are in use.

I read in other reviews about using it in the open with horses shod and possibly getting their hooves caught in it, so I felt that didn?t apply to my application because of the hayhut.

There is a learning curve to applying it to the bale, but isn?t everything in the horse world a bit of a learning curve? I plan to get more nets when I get more boarders and hayhuts for their pastures.

Not too bad
Saves you a lot of hay but horses do tear holes in it pretty easy. Holes can be patched with twine.
