Why did you choose this?

I purchased one to try. It works great so I’m getting them for my other buckets!

We’re about to have really bad weather need to make sure the water troughs don’t freeze

Seems most useful.

i've bought one years ago and its still working great. bought two more to replace higher wattage usage water heaters

Does this deicer sit on the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket or does it float?

These are fairly large so your bucket would need to be larger than5 gallons. It is both a float or on the bottom if you remove the Styrofoam.

i live in Maine, nice and chilly in the winter, would this work for a 110 gallon stock tank?

Im in arkansas and we got down into the low teens a few days last winter and it kept the water thawed for the most part, it was accessible for the horses. the was some ice forming around the outer ends of my 110 plastic tank. but directly above the heater did not freeze. If you're worried about it get one with a little more watts, i think this one is 250w but is more energy efficient and wont make the water too warm on normal chilly days. For the price difference I would give it a try , im going on the 3rd year with this one, still works.

will work for a 40 gallon tank?

I put two of these in my 100 gallon tank last winter and, except the bottom 2 inches which froze, the water stayed unfrozen. I live in North Carolina where we have rather mild winters (not sure where you are); but, last winter we had 2 weeks of temps in the low teens which is when I was especially glad to have these efficient little heaters! Hope this helps.

Does this has a sensor that turns it off when the temp is above freezing?

According to information provided, the heater should turn on when water temperature reaches about 35 degrees and turn off at about 45 degrees. I use one in a 5 gallon bucket and it seems to work well.. keeps the water from freezing when the temperature dips well below 32, probably down to about 10 to 15 degrees.
